A beginner’s guide to Holi

[25.07.2013]
Dear readers,
what an exciting weekend! On Sunday I was at the Holi in Bayreuth (small city in Bavaria). As a ‘buntes Bonbon’ (coloured sweetie) I was there because of the pretty colours but also because curiosity was so big!
There are more and more Holis in Germany and I think also in other parts of Europe or the whole world. But I couldn’t find some necessary tips on the internet, so I decided to talk about this topic a bit.
   1. Don’t take a camera with you! It’s just annoying when you’d like to dance and there are for sure enough professional photographers who hold the best moments. Furthermore the cam of your mobile phone is enough for this day.
   2. If you wanna take your camera with you nevertheless, ask before (!) the event, if you’re allowed to take it into the area, make a screenshot of the permission and take it with you as well. Please wrap your camera very well. Put a shift of cling wrap on the lens and then fold the whole camera with two or three other shifts of cling wrap and tape it well. Finally but it in a plastic bag but make a hole of the lens. So it’s powder-proof. But unfortunately not that much water-proof.
Or just buy a disposable cam for 2 or 3€.
  3. Look for a chaperon (if you’re under 18 or 21 maybe in other countries) or a written permission from your parents.
   4. Pack a small bag (one day before if that’s possible). It should include:
- ticket
- parents‘ permission
- ID
- money
- many tissues
- sunglasses
- sunscreen

- mobile phone
- plastic bags (for your mobile phone…)
  5. Don’t inhale the powder directly and close your eyes when the powder is thrown. Even better: put a tissue on your mouth, nose and eyes for not getting any irritations.
   6. Take enough money with you to buy something to drink. It’ll probably be hot and I’m sure nobody likes to collapse there. If there’ll be an accident please make clear where the paramedics are before!
   7. Don’t think about your appearance, just have fun!
  8. For all girls: Pin up your hair. After washing them three times my hair is still pink!
  9.  Wear really old stuff and not the new summer dress, the colour isn’t so easy to wash out, my underwear’s still coloured.
I hope that doesn’t sound deterrent, these are just tips to make the Holi more comfortable for you. If you were there ones, I’m sure you’d like to be there every week. It was such a great fun in Bayreuth and it was the perfect mix of summer, music and folly.
Have fun & maybe we’ll meet us at one of the next Holis :)
PS.: An insider’s tip for all girls: The most handsome guys were in Bayreuth just at the beginning, so don’t arrive pretty at the end.. And look out for the ‚free hugs guys‘ they were really yummy :D
